Why is this useful?

This document explains what contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) in water are, how and why CECs are harmful, how they enter our water systems, how they are or are not removed from our water, and how some federal regulations and state (AZ, CA) conversations are attempting to address them. Note that it was written in 2013 so it's dated. However, it's really helpful in understanding the big picture around CECs. This is not a peer reviewed article.
